FAQ

Migration questions, answered.

AWS will permanently shut down Amazon WorkMail on March 31, 2027. New customer signups are blocked starting April 30, 2026. After the shutdown date, you will no longer be able to access the WorkMail console, mailboxes, or any data. AWS recommends migrating to a third-party email provider before the deadline.

After March 31, 2027, all WorkMail mailboxes, messages, attachments, and calendar data will be permanently deleted and unrecoverable. IMAP and SMTP access will also stop. To avoid data loss, complete your migration and create a backup export before the shutdown date.

The most reliable method is IMAP-based migration. Connect to your WorkMail mailbox via IMAP (port 993, SSL/TLS) and sync messages to the destination provider. NamesLink includes built-in IMAP retrieval that lets admins batch-migrate mailboxes. Pilot one mailbox first to verify before migrating your entire team.

Yes. Your email addresses belong to your domain, not to WorkMail. Update your domain's MX records to point to the new provider's mail servers. For NamesLink, transfer your domain and update the MX records — new mail flows to your NamesLink inbox within minutes of DNS propagation.

Most small-to-medium migrations complete in under 30 minutes. The time depends on the number of mailboxes and total data volume. Experts recommend starting at least 6–12 months before the March 2027 deadline to allow time for testing and verification.

WorkMail IMAP servers vary by region: imap.mail.us-east-1.awsapps.com, imap.mail.us-west-2.awsapps.com, or imap.mail.eu-west-1.awsapps.com. Use port 993 with SSL/TLS and PLAIN authentication. SMTP uses port 465 with SSL. Your full WorkMail email address is the username.

WorkMail's built-in S3 export only covers email messages and calendar items in MIME format. Contacts, tasks, notes, email signatures, and aliases are not exported. To preserve contacts, export them manually from your email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, or Apple Mail) as .csv or .vcf. Calendar data can be exported as .ics files.

Yes. NamesLink supports standard IMAP, POP3, and SMTP protocols, so it works with Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, Gmail app, and any RFC-compliant email client. A full-featured webmail interface is also included.
